چکیده
The present research reports the first description of Shell Disease Syndrome in European spiny lobsters Palinurus elephas (Fabricius 1787), which occurred in an experimental aquaculture facility in Sicily (Italy). Both bacterial characterization and histopathological examination of the exoskeleton at site of lesions was carried out. Infected specimens showed tail fan erosions, and in one case uropod ulceration and complete loss of periods. Identified species included: Listonella anguillarum 50.5%, Vibrio parahaemolyticus 27.5% and Vibrio alginolyticus 22%. Microscopic evaluation of lesions indicate the presence of inflammatory responses, which include melanization and pseudomembrane formation, similar to those described for other crustaceans affected by SDS.

Acoustic behaviour of the European spiny lobster Palinurus elephas
The acoustic behaviour of the European spiny lobster Palinurus elephas (Fabricius, 1787) was examined in the absence or presence of predators or conspecifics. Observations were conducted in a tank equipped with digital video and acoustic monitoring and recording systems using 25 adult lobsters and 5 common octopuses Octopus vulgaris. Single lobsters or groups of 4 lobsters were studied for 2 h....

Haemolymph inorganic osmolyte changes and Na,K-ATPase activities in trichobranchiate and epipodite tissues were examined in the spiny lobster Palinurus elephas gradually acclimated from seawater (SW; 38 ppt, salinity; 1291 mOsmol/l) down to dilute seawater (DSW; 20 ppt, salinity; 679 mOsmol/l). During acclimation to DSW haemolymph was only transiently hypoosmotic, becoming isosmotic to the medi...

متن کاملQuaternary structure of the European spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas) 1x6-mer hemocyanin from cryoEM and amino acid sequence data.
Arthropod hemocyanins are large respiratory proteins that are composed of up to 48 subunits (8 x 6-mer) in the 75kDa range. A 3D reconstruction of the 1 x 6-mer hemocyanin from the European spiny lobster Palinurus elephas has been performed from 9970 single particles using cryoelectron microscopy. An 8A resolution of the hemocyanin 3D reconstruction has been obtained from about 600 final class ...
متن کاملPhylogeography of the European spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas): Influence of current oceanographical features and historical processes.
The European spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas) is a suitable model organism to study the effects of past history and current oceanographic processes on the genetic diversity and population structure of marine species with a long-lived larval phase. A portion of the COI gene was sequenced in 227 individuals from 11 localities, covering most of the present distribution of the species. Divergence ...
